SEAS approach for scoliosis
The SEAS (Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis), it is one of seven scientifically validated methods for the treatment of scoliosis, which are globally referred to by the acronym of ESSP (Physiotherapic Scoliosis-Specific Exercises).
PSSE treatments are approved by the SOSORT (Society On Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment), which is the world's leading scientific society dealing with the study and non-surgical treatment of scoliosis.
SOSORT is the reference authority for guidelines and clinical criteria for the non-surgical treatment of scoliosis (physiotherapy and corsets); defines clinical protocols (often defined “SOSORT criteria”) to determine when bracing is necessary and when to use PSSEs, based on the extent of the scoliotic curves and the age of the patient.
He SEAS, created by the Italian group ISICO, it is based on a continuous adaptation of the exercises to keep up with the results of international scientific research. For this reason the Isico group preferred to use the term “approach” instead of the most common “method”.
Rehabilitation program: SEAS is a personalized exercise program adapted to all conservative treatment situations of scoliosis: as a single therapy in medium-low grade curves during growth to reduce the risk of resorting to a brace; in addition to brace in medium-high degree curves during growth, with the aim of increasing the correction, prepare for separation from the guardian and avoid/reduce side effects; for adults with progressive or fusion scoliosis, to help stabilize the curve and reduce disability.
SEAS is based on a specific active self-correction technique performed without external aids and integrated into functional exercises. Evaluation tests guide the choice of the most appropriate exercises for the individual patient. Improving spinal stability in active self-correction is the primary objective of SEAS. SEAS exercises they train the neuromotor function in order to reflexively stimulate a self-corrected posture during daily life activities. SEAS can be performed on an outpatient basis (two/three times a week for 45 minutes) or as a home program from execute 20 minutes a day. In the latter case, specialist physiotherapy sessions are offered 1,5 hours every three months.
Results: Several articles, including a randomized controlled trial (2014), published in recent years,
have documented the effectiveness of the SEAS approach.
